Who Am I To Be? Who Am I Not To Be?

Marianne Williamson is famously quoted as saying, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence, automatically liberates others.”

It is time to give yourself permission to shine; to stand up and shout your message from the mountain tops. I know you feel like you might fail, but even if you do, surely that is better than regretting never having given it a go.

Most of us won’t let our light shine because we are afraid of three things:

  1. It won’t be perfect: Perfectionism is beautiful fertiliser for procrastination. Things will never be perfect, there will never been one perfect moment in time when all the planets align to make things smooth sailing. Sometimes it is the very lack of perfection which makes shining your light so much more helpful as it gives others permission to do the same.
  2. It will be judged or criticised and found wanting: This is always going to happen and it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time. If you are bold and you step up and let your light shine, people are going to judge you. It is what they do and their judgement is more a reflection of where they are rather than where you are. The more you stand out, the more shots will be fired your way. Take receiving them as a sign that you are doing a great job of stepping up.
  3. It has to be 100% done on our own to count: Really? Everyone who has ever achieved something great has had a whole support team behind them helping every step of the way. Why should you be any different? Ask for help when you need it and get started.

Failing is OK and part of being a less than perfect human. Regret because you never started something is not.

Today, find the courage to step up and let your light shine bright. Even if it touches one little corner of someone else’s life or one tiny part of the planet and the life on it, it will have been worth it.
